The Pastoral Council

The Pastoral Council is here to help our pastor understand what we want our parish to achieve and how to make it happen.  We are the “keepers of the vision” for St. Mark.  We plan for the future of our parish in consultation with parishioners, staff, and experts.

Our Role is consultative and our Pastor ultimately makes the decision based on our recommendation:

  • EXAMINE and identify issues at the request of the pastor or at its own initiation.

  • CONSIDER data collected from its examination and discern the direction that God would like us to go.

  • RECOMMEND and propose what should be done for this parish at this moment in its history.

  • CHAMPION & SUPPORT parish initiatives that have the Pastor’s blessing.

Membership

The Pastor strives to form a council that reflects the parish’s diversity and brings the talents needed to carry out the council’s duties. While some members bring experience as leaders of parish organizations & ministries, their role on the council is to support the parish mission and not to be an advocate for any particular ministry or organization. Terms of service typically are staggered and last for approximately 3 years. They may be shortened or lengthened at the discretion of the pastor.

The work of the Pastoral Council is to examine and consider all that relates to pastoral work and to offer practical conclusions on these matters, so that the life and activity of the People of God may be brought into greater conformity with the Gospel.

The Finance Council

Our role at the  Finance Council is to advise and assist the Pastor in overseeing and controlling the financial affairs of the parish. It is an Archdiocesan requirement in every parish. While the Pastor has the responsibility for final decisions, the Finance Council helps to:

  • Oversee the development of the balanced annual operating and capital budget

  • Conduct quarterly reviews of the parish financial statements which include monthly comparisons to the budgets

  • Determine sources of parish revenue and assist in the development of programs to increase revenue

  • Make recommendations for maintenance and improvements

  • Advice on managing and caring for parish buildings and equipment

  • Provide parishioners with the approved budget and financial statements at least annually

  • Ascertain compliance with Archdiocesan Financial Policies and Guidelines

Membership

The Finance Council must have at least 3 members who are appointed by the Pastor and serve for 3-year terms.  The Chairperson is appointed by the pastor and members meet on a monthly basis. To best serve the parish, the Council should have a range of skills and expertise in business, management, finance, accounting, legal, fundraising, and other related fields.
